Lotus (Padmasan)

Sit with your legs extended.  Bend your right leg at the knee and, using your hands, place your
foot on your left thigh.  Do the same with the other leg, placing your left foot on your right thigh.
Lotus
Easy pose (Sukhasan)

The Easy pose is nothing more than sitting cross-legged, Native American style, as you may have
been taught in cub scouts, kindergarten or day camp.  It comes easy.
Adept’s pose (Siddhasan)

The name of this pose makes it sound extremely difficult, but it’s not.  I find it to be quite
comfortable.
Sit with your legs extended.  Bend your right leg at the knee while drawing your foot in with your
hands so that your heel is up against your perineum.  Bring your left foot in while bending your
left leg at the knee.  The left foot may be placed on the right calf.  An alternative is to leave it on
the floor and merely bring it snug against the right calf.
This can be a hard pose to achieve.  The Hindu Yogi tends to have slender legs when contrasted
with a typical American whose legs may be muscular or chubby.  Short, fat legs can make it
virtually impossible to achieve the Lotus position.
For some it may be possible to get into the pose, but the accompanying tension or pain might
prove to be distracting.  It’s hard to relax or to meditate when your muscles and joints are
howling in agony.
There is a tradition of ascetics who have abused their bodies past the point of masochism.  In this
vein there have been sadhus fasting to the point of starvation, standing on one leg for years and
sitting in the lotus pose until the legs become withered and useless...

I do not advocate any practices such as these.
